Found this in the archives. It’s the photo that started the project off for me. Just amazing, interesting spaces.

These photographs were taken by Jane Maxwell-Hyslop. A friend of someone at work: she takes some beautiful photos of stuff I’m well into- i.e. Allotments and Trainspotters. Her ‘Personal Logic’ project is particularly great- reminds me a lot of my collectors project. I wish I was better at photos sometimes.I wish I could take as beautiful photographs as she does. ahhh well, for now I’m contented enough to look at Jane’s work. Lovely and brilliant inspiration.

So we went for a first wander around the area- first place we came to was not there- the map said it was but it was a badly cared for Jewish graveyard from about 1890′s from what we could tell but down the road was the local history library and archives- the collector in me sang when we got into the space. It was crammed with index cards , old maps, folders, files and books. The walls were dripping- we asked the nice archivist if he could tell us anything about allotments and furnished us with a good deal of press cutting s and ephemera from yesteryear- we got a couple of nice photocopies- a poster for fees and also some press cuttings from something like 1893- sweet. The thinky text part of this blog post will come later- i’m tired and it’s sunday- so research interests and what i thought of the day will be written up this week sometime.

Many thanks to Liam for putting me (Luke Thompson) and Lizzy Burt in contact for our mutual love of allotments. So this is the blog of the Allotment Project (name in progress), where I hope every last little thought, scrappy photo, sketchy drawing and screenshot will be posted as we work towards some kind of documentary of allotments- the spaces and the people in them.
